RESUMO

The bone texture of Rhea americana was evaluated through the examination of a postnatal ontogenetic series. The hind limb bone surfaces of specimens of one, three and five months old, and adults were compared to characterize each stage according to the morphological features generated by their differential ossification. The results suggest a similar process of tissue maturation concerning neognathous birds, although with some differences. A spongy or striated surface with abundant pores in the femur and longitudinal grooves in the tibiotarsus and tarsometatarsus characterizes chicks. Vascularity decreases, and the bone texture gradually changes acquiring a more homogeneous surface, to eventually reach the smooth appearance of adult bones. The establishment of particular textures corresponding to different bones and ontogenetic stages permits the accurate interpretation of remains in ecological, archaeological and paleontological contexts in which bones are fragmented and/or incomplete.

A bolsa cloacal é o órgão das aves responsável pela maturação e transferência de linfócitos para outros tecidos. Apesar da importância deste órgão nos mecanismos imunológicos desses animais, são escassas as informações a respeito de sua morfologia em emas. Neste estudo, objetivou-se descrever o desenvolvimento morfológico da bolsa cloacal de emas jovens. Utilizou-se 12 animais de ambos os sexos (6 machos e 6 fêmeas) para a microscopia de luz, eletrônica de transmissão e varredura. Microscopicamente, a bolsa cloacal da ema apresentou, em todas as idades a mucosa interna pregueada composta por lóbulos linfoides de diversos tamanhos, organizados como estrutura alveolar. Em cada prega verificou-se quatro componentes histológicos: as camadas mucosa, submucosa, muscular e adventícia. Esses lóbulos eram compostos de uma zona cortical, uma zona corticomedular e uma zona medular. Verificou-se a existência de linfócitos de tamanhos variados, linfoblastos, capilares sanguíneos, células reticulares epiteliais e macrófagos. Pela microscopia eletrônica de varredura, verificou-se que a superfície da mucosa dos lóbulos bursais apresentaram projeções poligonais, com a presença de curtas microvilosidades em toda a superfície. A comparação nas idades de 0 e 15 semanas de vida demostrou o desenvolvimento dos lóbulos bursais. O padrão morfológico da bolsa cloacal de emas difere do padrão comumente reportado para outras aves tais como pato selvagem, galinha da angola, ganso nativo, peru, codorna japonesa e falcão.(AU)


The cloacal bursa is the bird's organ responsible for maturation and transfer of lymphocytes to other tissues. Despite the importance of this organ in the immunological mechanisms of these animals, information about their morphology in rhea are scarce. We used 12 animals (6 males and 6 females) for light, transmission electron, and scanning microscopy. Microscopically, the cloacal bursa presented the inner mucosa consists of pleated lymphoid lobes of various sizes, organized as alveolar structure, in all ages. In each nail was found four histological components: mucosa, submucosa, muscular and adventitia layers. These lobes were composed of a cortical zone, a corticomedular zone and a medular area. It was verified the existence of varying sizes lymphocytes, lymphoblasts, blood capillaries, epithelial reticular cells and macrophages. By scanning electron microscopy, it was found that the mucous membrane surface of the bursal lobes showed polygonal projections, with the presence of short microvilli membranes throughout the surface. The comparison between 0 and 15 weeks demonstrated the development of the bursal lobes. The morphological pattern of the rhea cloacal bursa differs from standard commonly reported for other birds such as wild duck, Angola's chicken, native goose, turkey, Japanese quail, and Hawk.(AU)

The objective of this study was to study the morphological pattern of bone maturation of the hindlimb bones of Rhea americana and find out how it can affect bone morphology after a taphonomic process. Juvenile specimens (n = 10) ranging from one month old to eight months old were studied. For comparison, bones from adults and juveniles from museum specimens (n = 4 and n = 6, respectively) were studied. In fresh bones, ossification centres were identified in the proximal and distal epiphyses of the tibiotarsi and in the proximal epiphysis of the tarsometatarsi, whereas the distal region of the femora and tarsometatarsi showed abundance of cartilage. The development and extension of the ossification centres of the tibiotarsi were different. In the proximal epiphysis, the centre presented less development with respect to the distal epiphysis. In the dry tibiotarsi, the proximal centre was absent and the distal one was well preserved. Both the fresh and dry juvenile tarsometatarsi presented unfused metatarsals and bulkier and wider aspect than the adult ones. The dry femora presented a noticeable excavation between condyles, whereas the dry tarsometatarsi showed the absence of the proximal epiphysis. The femora, tibiotarsi and tarsometatarsi possessed different traits of immaturity, which differentially affect the morphology of the preserved bones during a taphonomic process.

The purpose of this study was to study the microscopic morphology of the testicular parenchyma of Rhea americana birds. Fifty-four 2.5±0.5 year-old male adults bred in captivity. were used. During commercial slaughter, samples of testis were collected in November/2005, December/2006 and May/2007, in order to compare possible differences. The samples underwent optical microscopy analysis and measurements of seminiferous tubule (ST) total diameters, lumen, epithelium thickness and the relative volume of parenchyma. The ST had circular form in transverse cross sections. November/2005 and December/2006 samples had many types of germinative cells and spermatozoa in lumen, but in May/2007 the samples of epithelium were poor regarding meiotic and mitotic pictures, and it was difficult to find any spermatozoon; in many tubules the lumen was inexistent or diminished. In December/2006 and May/2007 the averages were: tubule diameter 110.3 and 5.3mµ, lumen 52.4 and 4.5mµ, epithelium thickness 57.8 and 0.7mµ respectively. The volumetric proportions were: seminiferous epithelium 75.6 and 75.9, cysts in epithelium 2.1 and 1.0, ST 93.3 and 84.0, interstitium 6.2 and 15.6 respectively. The sperm reserves were: 19.7±2 and 0±0 x109 sperm cells in December 2006 and May 2007 respectively. Microscopic measures of seminiferous tubules, spermatic cells and diameter of the nuclei were presented. These data confirm reproductive seasonality, with breeding season in spring-summer with sperm production. A great variation n parenchyma, when compared breeding was noticeable.(AU)


O objetivo do estudo foi estudar a morfologia microscópica do parênquima testicular de emas (Rhea americana). Foram utilizados 54 machos adultos criados em cativeiro de 2,5±0,5 anos de idade. Durante o abate comercial foram coletadas amostras de testículos em novembro/2005, dezembro/2006 e maio/2007, para efeitos de comparação. As amostras foram processadas e para microscopia ótica de rotina para análise. Foram medidas diâmetro total de túbulos seminíferos (ST), lúmen, espessura do epitélio e a proporção volumétrica dos componentes do parênquima. O ST apresentou forma circular nas seções transversais. Em novembro/2005 e dezembro/2006, se observaram os tipos de células germinativas e espermatozoides no lúmen. Em maio/2007, as amostras de epitélio se observaram escassas meioses e imagens de mitose e era difícil de ver qualquer espermatozoide, em muitos dos túbulos o lúmen era inexistentes ou diminuído de tamanho. Em dezembro/2006 e maio/2007, as médias das características estudadas foram: diâmetro dos túbulos 110,3 e 5,3 mµ, lúmen 52,4 e 4,5mµ, espessura do epitélio 57,8 e 0,7mµ, respectivamente. As proporções volumétricas foram: epitélio seminífero 75,6 e 75,9, cistos no epitélio 2,1 e 1,0, túbulos seminíferos 93,3 e 84,0, interstício 6,2 e 15,6, respectivamente. Foram apresentadas medidas microscópicas de túbulos seminíferos, diâmetro dos núcleos das espermátides. Estes dados confirmam a sazonalidade reprodutiva, com época de reprodução na primavera - verão, com a produção de esperma. Foi perceptível uma grande variação nas medidas do parênquima testicular, quando se comparou a estação reprodutiva.(AU)

The purpose of this research was to study the macroscopic testicular and epididymal morphology of the greater rhea. The testicles of 54 greater rhea bred in captivity were utilized. The samples were collected November 2005 (n = 14), December 2006 (n = 20) and May 2007 (n = 20). During commercial slaughter, the testicles and epididymides were collected and their following morphometric parameters were immediately measured: length, width, thickness, circumference, volume, weight of the parenchyma and the tunica albuginea, also aspects such as shape, cavity implantation, relationship with other organs and vascularization. The testicles presented cylindrical shape, with a thin, dense and transparent tunica albuginea, and the vascularization was accomplished by the testicular artery that ramifies from the cranial rectal artery. In the samples from December 2006 and May 2007, the media from the macroscopic measures of the right testicles were volume 58.7 and 14.7 ml, length 9.87 and 3.5 cm, width 2.4 and 0.6 cm, thickness 2.4 and 0.5 cm, circumference 8.0 and 2.3 cm, parenchyma weight 27.6 and 6.1 g and tunica albuginea weight 1.0 and 0.3 g, P < 0.05, respectively. The epididymides, the media from macroscopic measures December 2006 and May 2007 were volume 7.7 and 3.0 ml, length 5.8 and 1.3 cm, width 0.7 and 0.3 cm, thickness 0.6 and 0.3 cm, circumference 2.5 and 1.2 cm, tissue weight 6.4 and 2.8 g and capsule weight 0.4 and 0.1 g, P < 0.05, respectively. Some measures from the right testicle and epididymis were superior to measures taken from the left ones (P < 0.05), but these were not characterizing asymmetry. The morphometric parameters observed during November 2005 remained on an intermediate situation (P < 0.05); however, they were quantitatively closer to the means of December 2006, which may characterize it as a potential transition period between repose and sexual activity. Morphologically, the testicles and epididymides of greater rhea have common points with other researched birds; however, differences were observed. The testicles and epididymides of the Rhea americana are influenced by the environment, presenting reproductive activity season (November-December) during late spring, early summer and sexual repose season (May) during autumn-winter. The morphometric testicular and epididymal measurements were introduced. The morphometric parameters of testicles and epididymides exhibited differences between winter and spring-summer that could be established like sexual activity season.

The greater rhea (Rhea americana) is the largest South American bird. It is a cursorial, flightless species with long powerful legs and reduced forelimbs. The goal of this study was to explore how hindlimb muscles scale with body mass during postnatal growth and to analyze whether the specialized locomotion of this species affects the growth of muscle masses. The mass of 19 muscles and body mass were weighed in 21 specimens ranging from 1-month-old individuals to adults. Seventeen muscles scaled with positive allometry with respect to body mass, whereas two muscles scaled isometrically. The predominance of positive allometric growth in hindlimb muscles results in a limb with massive and powerful muscles specialized to support a large body mass and to attain relatively high running speeds. Analysis of muscle mass scaling is a simple and useful way to compare possible differences between locomotor styles, and it is valuable in studies that reconstruct the paleobiology of extinct taxa.

The rhea (Rhea americana americana) is an american bird belonging to Ratite's family. Studies related to its morphology are still scarce. This study aims to describe the macroscopic structures of the oropharyngeal cavity. Five heads (2 to 6 months old) formalin preserved were anatomically dissected to expose the oropharynx. The oropharynx of the rhea was "bell-shaped" composed by the maxillary and mandibular rhamphotheca. The roof and floor presented two distinct regions different in colour of the mucosa. The rostral region was pale pink contrasting to grey coloured caudal region. The median longitudinal ridge extended rostrally from the apex of the choana to the tip of the beak in the roof and it is clearly more prominent and rigid than the homolog in the floor that appeared thin and stretched merely along the rostral portion of the regio interramalis. The floor was formed by the interramal region, (regio interramalis) tongue and laryngeal mound containing glove-shaped glottis. This study confirmed the basic morphology of the oropharinx of the rhea. However, important morphological information not previously described is highlighted and contradictory information present in the literature is clarified.(AU)


A ema é uma ave Americana pertencente à familia das Ratitas. Estudos relacionados a sua morfologia são escassos. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever as estruturas macroscópicas da cavidade orofaríngea. Cinco cabeças (dois a seis meses de idade) de emas fixadas em formol foram dissecadas para a exposição da orofaringe. A orofaringe das emas apresentou formato de "sino" composta pela ranfoteca maxilar e mandibular. O teto e o assoalho apresentavam duas regiões distintas com diferenças na coloração da mucosa. A região rostral era rosa clara contrastando com a coloração cinza da região caudal. A linha longitudinal mediana se estendia rostralmente do ápice da coana ate a extremidade do bico no teto e esta era bem proeminente e rígida quanto a mesma estrutura no assoalho, esta apresentou-se estendida ao longo da porção rostral da região interramal. O assoalho estava formado pela região interramal, língua, glote e cartilagens da laringe com formato de dedos de luvas. O estudo confirma a morfologia básica da orofaringe das emas. Entretanto, importantes informações morfológicas não descritas anteriormente são destacadas e informações contraditórias presentes na literatura são esclarecidas.(AU)

RESUMO

1. The feasibility and accuracy of the cloacal sexing technique in greater rhea chicks was assessed using chicks of two captive populations of greater rhea in Córdoba, Argentina. 2. A total of 46 greater rhea chicks of 2 to 3 months of age were randomly arranged into three groups and the members of each group were sexed by a different operator. 3. A feather of each chick was plucked for sexing through a molecular method and results were used as controls. 4. Sex was correctly assigned by cloacal inspection in 98% of the cases. Chick manipulation was easily performed and no infections or traumatic lesions were observed a posteriori. 5. Cloacal sexing of rhea chicks up to 3 months of age does not affect animal welfare and should be considered an efficient alternative to molecular methods.

As emas são aves que pertencem ao grupo das ratitas e juntamente com os avestruzes e emus, são as maiores aves vivas na atualidade. Neste trabalho estudou-se os aspectos macroscópicos do aparelho digestório de emas com o intuito de fornecer informações importantes ao estudo dos hábitos alimentares dessas aves, bem como de sua anatomia. Foram utilizados vinte animais jovens com idade entre dois e seis meses obtidos do Centro de Multiplicação de Animais Silvestres (Cemas), registrado com criador científico sob o nº 1478912. Após dissecação verificou-se que a língua era pequena, disposta no assoalho da cavidade oral, possui forma rombóide e estava inserida pela sua base por um frênulo. O esôfago era um tubo retilíneo de aspecto elástico com fibras longitudinais, sem dilatação, o que confere a ausência do papo. O proventrículo gástrico apresentava formato fusiforme. O ventrículo gástrico possuía formato ligeiramente oval, quando repleto, internamente era recoberto por uma cutícula gástrica espessa. O intestino delgado era formado por três regiões distintas: duodeno, jejuno e íleo. O duodeno possuía coloração cinza claro e apresentava-se curvado em forma de "U". O jejuno era longo e formado por várias alças curtas dispostas uma sobre a outra e possuía coloração verde escuro. O íleo era de cor cinza e continuo com o jejuno. Na linha ventral ao reto e cloaca, este se estendia em sentido cranial, dorsalmente ao duodeno ascendente. O intestino grosso era formado por dois cecos, um direito e um esquerdo, e o cólon-reto contínuo com o íleo e a cloaca. As estruturas que compõem o aparelho digestório de ema assemelham-se com o que preconiza a literatura, com relação à forma e topografia para a maioria das aves, contudo os cecos são bem desenvolvidos e bastante dilatados nas emas.


Rheas are birds belonging to the ratites group and, among ostriches and emus, are the largest birds currently alive. In this work we studied the macroscopic aspects of rheas' digestive tract in order to provide important information to a better understanding of these birds' eating habits as well their anatomy. Twenty young animals aging between two and six months from the Centre for Wild Animals Multiplication (Cemas, scientific breeding license form Ibama no.1478912) were used. After dissection it was observed that their tongue was small and presented a rhomboid form, being disposed on the oral cavity floor, and inserted in its base by a frenulum. The esophagus was a rectilinear tube with elastic aspect and longitudinal elastic fibers, without dilation, which gives it an absence of crop. The proventriculus presented a fusiform form and the gastric ventricle showed and slightly oval form when filled, and was internally coated with a thick gastric cuticle. The small intestine was composed of three distinct regions: duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The duodenum had a light gray color and showed a "U" curved shaped. The jejunum was dark green, long and composed of several short loops arranged above each other. The ileum had a gray color and was connected with the jejunum. In ventral line to the rectum and cloaca, the ileum extended cranially, dorsally to the ascending duodenum. The large intestine was composed of two caeca, one right and one left, and colon-rectum and ileum were continuous with the cloaca. The structures of the rhea digestive tract resemble those described in the literature regarding to its shape and topography, even though rhea's caeca are well developed and relatively long.

Morphological characteristics of the tongue were studied in adult rhea (Rhea americana). The lingual surface and the surface of epithelium-connective tissue interface of rhea tongue were examined macroscopically and by light and scanning electron microscopy. The rhea tongue revealed a triangular aspect, without adjustment of the inferior bill formation, occupying approximately » of the length of the oral cavity. Lingual papilla-like structures were not observed over the lingual surface. The tongue mucosa was composed of a thick non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium in the dorsal and ventral part, supported by a connective tissue core. The submucosa contained numerous glands with cytoplasmic granules, and luminal secretion was positive for histochemical reaction to Alcian Blue in pH 2.5 and PAS, and negative to Alcian Blue in pH 0.5. Despite the rudimentary characteristic of the tongue in rhea, our results suggest an important role of tongue secretions in food lubrication and humidification during the swallowing process, based on the enormous quantity of lingual glands in the submucosa and the histochemical characteristics of their secretions.

1. A study was conducted to evaluate how body weight and age of each female are related to the number and physical and chemical characteristics of the eggs produced throughout a breeding season in a captive-bred population of Greater Rheas (Rhea americana). 2. Reproductive performance of 15 females of three age classes (5 individuals per class) was monitored; female body weight was recorded before laying-onset. All the eggs laid were collected and identified, and different morphometric variables, percentage of components and fatty acid composition were determined. 3. The earlier the female started egg-laying, the longer the laying period and the greater the overall number of eggs produced. The onset of egg-laying in turn seemed to be related to the attainment of a high body weight. 4. Except for length, the values of the morphometric variables of the egg and unsaturated fatty acids (palmitoleic, oleic and linoleic) increased with female age. 5. High body weight was associated with low palmitic and palmitoleic fatty acids and high linoleic, linolenic and total unsaturated fatty acids. 6. Live weight and age of females can determine several physical and chemical characteristics of eggs.

We examined the external anatomy of the endocast of the Greater Rhea (Rhea americana, Palaeognathae), during 3 main stages of its postnatal life, and compared it with information available on other palaeognathous birds. Series of scans with spiral computed tomographies were obtained from 3 skulls of different ages (chick, juvenile and adult) of R. americana; digital 3-dimensional reconstruction was performed and brain volumes were calculated from the models obtained. Qualitative assessment of the brain anatomy of R. americana indicates a conical and ventrally located bulbus olfactorius, laterally expanded hemispherium telencephali, well-developed eminentia sagittalis, and conspicuous cerebellum and tectum mesencephali. Anatomy of the chick brain was markedly different: less lateral expansion of the hemispherium telencephali, and lesser development of the eminentia sagittalis and auricula cerebelli. Little change between chicks and adults was observed in some brain regions such as the tectum mesencephali, while the eminentia sagittalis showed great increase in size. The large size of the eminentia sagittalis coupled with its increasing development during ontogeny could reflect its importance for visual processing functions and the way these improve during growth. Finally, the brain of R. americana is similar to that of Struthio and Dromaius, but differs from that of the Tinamidae and of Apteryx, allowing recognition of 3 distinct brain morphologies among the Palaeognathae.

The Greater Rhea is the largest cursorial Ratitae bird native to South America. Due to its increasing importance in farming and therefore in the sustainable use of this species, a comprehensive knowledge of their anatomy is essential. The goal of this study was to provide an anatomical description of the hindlimb muscles of Rhea americana. Six adult birds of both sexes were macroscopically studied analysing the origin and insertion of thigh and shank muscles. The thigh showed the highest number of muscles, whereas the shank showed the lowest number; this feature minimizes inertia and allows achieving high stride frequencies. The muscles of the shank showed long tendons of insertion that reduce the energetic cost during running. The major muscles responsible for extension of the hip and the ankle joints were massive and robust indicating their importance for cursorial locomotion. The pelvic limb muscles of Rhea americana resemble those of other cursorial Ratitae and their features are consistent with specialization for high-speed locomotion.

El ñandú (Rhea americana) es un ave corredora autóctona de Sudamérica la cual hace ya algunos años ha despertado cierto interés productivo. Sin embargo, la morfología detallada a nivel de las aves domésticas aún se desconoce en muchos aspectos; entre ellos el peritoneo. El objetivo de este trabajo es describir el peritoneo parietal, visceral y de conexión del ñandú acorde con los principios de la Nómina Anatómica Aviar. Se utilizaron 7 animales adultos; 5 machos y 2 hembras de entre 8 y 25 kg. de peso procedentes de un criadero comercial. Fueron eutanasiados por sobredosis de tiopental sódico. La cavidad peritoneal estaba dividida en una parte craneal (equivalente a 1/3) y una parte caudal al estómago (equivalente a 2/3 del total del abdomen). En la parte caudal se encontraba la totalidad del intestino y el páncreas, mientras que en la parte craneal se observó el hígado y la vesícula biliar. Un omento menor fijaba el estómago al hígado cranealmente hacia la derecha y un omento mayor pequeño con una bolsa omental cerrada lo fijaba caudalmente hacia la izquierda. La raíz del mesenterio fijaba al yeyuno, al íleon y a ambos ciegos entre sus hojas a través de amplios pliegues ileocecales. Desde la raíz del mesenterio un corto mesoduodeno sujetaba al duodeno descendente y ascendente hacia la derecha. El colon estaba sostenido por un amplio mesocolon desde distal a la desembocadura de los ciegos hasta su terminación en la cloaca. Se concluye que esta especie corredora presenta similitudes con las aves domésticas. Sin embargo, lo relativamente grueso y fuerte del peritoneo de conexión sumado a lo compartimentado de la cavidad peritoneal hacen suponer que se trata de una adaptación para la carrera al permitir una gran sujeción de las vísceras abdominales.


The rhea (Rhea americana) is a native ratite from South America which has woken up since a few years ago a big productive interest. However the detailed morphology of the rhea at the level at the domestic birds is still unknown in many aspects, on of them is the peritoneum. The aim of this work is to describe the parietal, visceral and connection peritoneum of the rhea according to the anatomical avian nomenclature. Seven specimens of adult rhea were used, five males and two females about 8 and 25 kg of weight. All of them proceeding from a commercial farm. The animals were slaughtered before their study. The peritoneum that cover the abdominal wall and the visceral and connection peritoneum that support the abdominal viscera were observed and described. The peritoneal cavity were divided into two parts, one was craneal to the ventriculum (1/3 parts from the total of the abdomen) and the other was caudal (2/3). Into the cranial part we founded the liver and the gallbladder while into the caudal part we founded the intestine and the pancreas. The stomach was fixed to the liver cranially to the right by a minor omentus and caudally to the left was fixed by a small major omentus with a close omental bag. The root of the mesentery was fixing the yeyuno, ileum and both caecums between its sheets towards wide ileocecalis creases. From the mesentery root a short mesoduodenum was holding the descending and ascending duodenum towards the right. The colon was supported by a wide mesocolon. We concluded that this ratite has similarities with the domestic birds. Nevertheless, the thickness and strong connection peritoneum and the compartmentalization of the peritoneal cavity make us suppose that it is an adaption to the race since it is a big subjection to the abdominal viscera.

A ema (Rhea americana) é uma ave sul-americana do grupo das ratitas, da ordem Rheiforme, freqüentemente explorada com fins econômicos, como pecuária alternativa em países europeus e sul-americanos. No Brasil, destaca-se o Rio Grande do Sul e, em fase inicial, o Nordeste. O presente estudo objetivou descrever a morfologia das células sangüíneas em ema. Neste trabalho foram utilizados dez exemplares, desconsiderando-se idade e sexo. Foram colhidos 3 mL de sangue periférico por punção da veia braquial, com seringa descartável. As amostras foram utilizadas, em parte, na confecção de extensões coradas com Leishman. Feita a análise morfológica ao Microscópio de Luz, foram observados sete tipos celulares nucleados. O eritrócito mostrou-se elíptico, com núcleo geralmente condensado, de forma elíptica; citoplasma acidófilo. O trombócito apresentou-se elíptico, com núcleo localizado em um dos pólos; citoplasma pálido. Quanto aos leucócitos, de forma arredondada, entre os granulócitos os heterófilos apresentaram-se com núcleo excêntrico, condensado, lobulado; citoplasma rico em grânulos fusiformes de coloração salmão. Os eosinófilos distinguem-se dos heterófilos pelos grânulos arredondados eosinofílicos. Os basófilos destacam-se dos outros granulócitos pelo núcleo grande e central, com grânulos citoplasmáticos específicos arredondados e fortemente basofílicos. Entre os agranulócitos, os monócitos mostraram núcleo rineforme, freqüentemente central, de cromatina frouxa, com pequenas áreas de condensação; citoplasma levemente basofílico e com vacúolos. Os linfócitos apresentaram-se variados em forma e tamanho; núcleo grande com cromatina frouxa, com alguns nucléolos; citoplasma escasso e basofílico. As células do sangue periférico de Rhea americana apresentam ao Microscópio de Luz morfologia semelhante às demais aves já estudadas.


The rhea (Rhea americana) is a South American bird of the ratite group and of the Rheiformes order. It has been exploited for economical purposes, as cattle alternative in European and South American countries. In Brazil, the State of Rio Grande do Sul is outstanding, in rhea rearing and it is in the process of implantation in the Country Northeasty Region. This work aims to describe the morphology of the blood cells in rheas. In this work ten rheas were used, regardless age and sex. Two ml of peripheral blood were collected by puncture of the brachial vein with disposable syringe. The samples here partially used to make extensions with Leishman stain. Seven types of nucleate cells have been observed through morphologic analysis on the light microscope. The erythrocyte revealed an elliptical form, with condensed nucleus of elliptical form; acidophilic cytoplasm. The thrombocyte revealed an elliptical form, with nucleus located in one of the polarregions; pale cytoplasm. As to the round-shaped leukocytes, within the granulocytes, the heterophils presented excentric, condensed, and lobulated nucleus; cytoplasm rich in fusiform salmon-colored granules. The eosinophils distinguish from the heterophils due to the round eosinophilic granules. The basophils stand out from the other granulocytes due to its large and central nucleus with round specific cytoplasmic and highly basophilic granules. Within the agranulocytes, the monocytes presented reniform nucleus, which is frequently central, with slack chromatin, with small areas of condensation; cytoplasm lightly basophilic and with vacuoles. The lymphocytes presented varies forms and sizes; large nucleus with slack chromatin with some nucleoli; scarce and basophilic cytoplasm.The cells of the peripheral blood of Rhea americana present on the light microscope morphology similar to the other birds which have already been studied.

The morphological characteristics of the oviduct of 12 sexually mature rheas (Rhea americana) were studied. Only the left oviduct is developed as a long tube with a length of 122 +/- 23.1 cm, and is subdivided into infundibulum (15.2 +/- 4.0 cm), magnum (63.3 +/- 9.4 cm), isthmus (5.6 +/- 3.1 cm), uterus (16.0 +/- 4.2 cm) and vagina (11.5 +/- 1.4 cm). The mucous membrane of the oviduct, as a whole, possesses luminal folds covered by ciliated columnar epithelium with secretory cells. The infundibulum part presents a cranial opening with thin and long fimbriae with few tubular glands in caudal tubular portion. In the magnum, the largest portion of the oviduct, the folds are thicker and are filled with tubular glands. The isthmus is short and presents less bulky folds and a few tubular glands. A bag-shaped uterus in the cranial area shows thin folds, and in the caudal region (shell gland) more ramified folds with few tubular glands. The vagina has long luminal folds and a thick muscular tunic; no glands with sperm-storage characteristics have been observed. In conclusion, the oviduct in sexually mature rhea has morphological similarities with the other species of birds already described; however it presents its own characteristics to produce a big egg.

The ovarian morphology of the sexually mature rhea (Rhea Americana) is described. Ovaries from 24 adult rheas in their reproductive age were collected in the slaughterhouse. Follicular diameters (n = 18) were measured and samples (n = 6) were fixed in 10 percent formaldehyde with 0.1M phosphate buffer at pH 7.4 for light microscopy. Results showed that the left ovary occupied the dorsal portion of the celomatic cavity in contact with the cranial portion of the left kidney and the suprarenal gland, being supported in the cavity through the mesovary. On the free surface of the ovary 72.4±17.09 follicles in different phases of development and 30.4±3.65 atretic follicles were observed. The follicles were linked to the ovarian surface by the follicular stalk and had a wide band surrounding its surface, the Stigma folliculare. Histologically, the ovary is constituted by a medulla, composed by connective tissue and vessels, and by a cortex with oocytes and follicles. The follicular wall is composed by the Theca externa and Theca interna, Stratum granulosum and the Zona radiata. The ovary surface is covered by a cubic epithelium, the germinal epithelium, on the connective tissue of the Tunica albuginea. The morphologic characteristics of the ovary of the rhea are due to the egg size in this species and generally similar to other birds.


A morfologia do ovário de emas adultas (Rhea americana) sexualmente maduras foi descrita neste trabalho. Os ovários de 24 fêmeas em fase reprodutiva foram colhidos em abatedouro, tomados dados métricos do diâmetro dos folículos (n = 18) e colhidos fragmentos para microscopia de luz (n = 6) fixados em formol 10 por cento, PBS 0,1M, pH 7,4 para microscopia de luz. Nas emas o ovário esquerdo está desenvolvido, ocupando a porção dorsal da cavidade celomática em contato com a porção cranial do rim esquerdo e a glândula adrenal esquerda, sustentado na cavidade pelo mesovário. Na superfície livre do ovário foram observados em média 72,4±17,09 folículos em desenvolvimento e 30,4±3,65 folículos atrésicos. Os folículos estão unidos à superfície ovariana pelo pedúnculo folicular e os em desenvolvimento apresentam uma cinta na superfície, o estigma folicular, rompida nos folículos atrésicos. Histologicamente, o ovário possui uma medula, com tecido conjuntivo frouxo e vasos sangüíneos e um córtex repleto de oócitos e folículos, cuja parede está constituída pelas tecas externa e interna, estrato granuloso e zona radia-da. No córtex observam-se folículos primordiais, pré-vitelogêni-cos e vitelogênicos. A superfície do ovário está revestida por epitélio cúbico baixo, o epitélio germinativo, o qual está sobre o tecido conjuntivo da túnica albugínea. As características morfológicas do ovário da ema são resultado do tamanho do ovo produzido e em geral semelhante ao de outras espécies de aves.

Struthio camelus domesticus (Swart, 1987) es descrita como reflejo del híbrido natural de avestruces de granja en Sudáfrica, la que actualmente se conoce como avestruz de cuello negro o African Black. Esta ave fue desarrollada mediante programas de mejoramiento genético, con el objetivo de aumentar el valor comercial de la especie. Se caracteriza por ser de menor talla y más fértil que las otras subespecies, estructura del plumaje bien desarrollada, carácter dócil, y de fácil crianza en granjas, ya que es tremendamente curiosa y amigable con los humanos (Deeming, 2001; Camiruaga, 2004). En relación a las características anatómicas generales del tracto digestivo, Camiruaga & Simonetti, (2003) señalan que el avestruz presenta semejanzas y diferencias, tanto con otras aves, como con los rumiantes y otros herbívoros (equinos). Del análisis comparativo con la gallina, presenta ciertas diferencias anatómicas, una de ellas es no presentar buche, órgano almacenador de alimento que existe en otras aves. El proventrículo y el estómago muscular (molleja), en el avestruz, pueden cumplir dicha función (Angel, 1996). No presentan vesícula biliar, por lo que el vaciamiento de la bilis se realiza directamente al intestino delgado. Además, el intestino grueso del avestruz, a diferencia de otras especies, representa el 50 % del largo total del tubo digestivo y el intestino delgado corresponde sólo al 35,5%. (Camiruaga, 2004). En el presente trabajo se analizó la histología normal de los diferentes segmentos del tubo digestivo del avestruz: esófago, proventrículo, estómago muscular (molleja o ventrículo), intestino delgado (duodeno, yeyuno e íleon) e intestino grueso (ciego, colon y recto), y se analizó comparativamente con especies a las que se le asocia morfológicamente, como las aves domésticas, rumiantes, seudo rumiantes (camélidos) y algunos otros herbívoros.

Several different types of cranial kinesis are present within modern birds, enabling them to move (part of) the upper bill relative to the braincase. This movement of the upper bill results from movement of the quadrate and the pterygoid-palatine complex (PPC). The taxon Palaeognathae is characterised by a very distinct PPC and a special type of cranial kinesis (central kinesis) that is very different from that found in the Neognathae. This has led some authors to hypothesise that there is a functional relationship between the morphology of the PPC and the type of cranial kinesis. This hypothesis is tested here by analysing the movement pattern of both the upper bill and the PPC in birds with three different types of cranial kinesis: prokinesis, distal rhynchokinesis and central rhynchokinesis. Movement patterns were determined using a Roentgen stereophotogrammetry method, which made it possible to detect very small displacements (0.5 mm) of bony elements in three dimensions, while the jaw muscles and ligaments remained intact. We found that in all types of kinesis investigated the movements of the quadrate, jugal bars and PPC are similar. Movement of the quadrate is transferred to the upper beak by the jugal bar and the PPC, which moves almost exclusively forwards and backwards, thereby elevating or depressing the upper bill. The differences between the types of kinesis lie only in the position of the point of rotation. These findings indicate that there is no correlation between the specific morphology of the PPC and the type of cranial kinesis. Several other factors, including the external forces applied during food acquisition, may influence the morphology of the PPC. Differences in PPC morphology therefore appear to be the result of different functional demands acting on the system simultaneously but with different strengths, depending on the species.

Microspectrophotometry was used to determine the absorbance spectra of both rod and cone visual pigments and oil droplets from the retinae of the ostrich (Struthio camelus) and rhea (Rhea americana). Light and fluorescence microscopy of whole fresh tissue mounts were used to determine the relative numbers and distribution of oil droplets in the retinae. Both species possessed rods, double cones and four classes of single cone identified by their oil droplets. The rods had lambda max at about 505 nm, whereas three cone pigments were recorded with lambda max at 570, 505 and 445 nm. The P570 pigment was located in both members of the double cones and in a class of single cone containing an R-type oil droplet (lambda cut at 555 nm). The P505 and P445 cone pigments were found in populations of single cones containing Y-type and C-type oil droplets (lambda cut of 500 and 420 nm, respectively). The fourth class of single cone contained a T-type droplet and in the ostrich contained a visual pigment with lambda max at about 405 nm. Double cones possessed a P-type droplet in the principal member and an A-type droplet in the accessory member. The complement of visual pigments and oil droplets, and the ratio of cone types in the ostrich and rhea, are remarkably similar to those found in many groups of neognathous birds.
